The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has transformed the Sir M Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh Metro station on the Pink Line into a tribute to India’s highest military awardees, the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) recipients.
The platform walls of this station are now adorned with vivid and lifelike depictions of these courageous individuals, immortalising their bravery and selflessness in the face of adversity. This move underscores Delhi Metro’s unwavering commitment to preserving the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. The Param Vir Chakra, known as the “Wheel of the Ultimate Brave,” is the highest gallantry award conferred by India. Since its inception, it has been awarded 21 times, with 14 of these honours posthumously. The award recognises the most conspicuous acts of bravery in the presence of the enemy, transcending rank or branch of service. Through this installation, DMRC aims to create a permanent space within India’s busiest metro network that fosters national pride and gratitude. Commuters are invited to pause and reflect on the heroic lives of these PVC recipients, whose valor has shaped the nation’s history.

The artworks at the Moti Bagh Metro station are not mere illustrations; they are a celebration of the spirit of resilience and patriotism that defines India. Each portrait is accompanied by a brief description, offering commuters a chance to learn about the recipients’ remarkable journeys. This creative integration of art and history within one of the busiest public transport systems in India allows commuters to engage with the nation’s military legacy in a meaningful and personal way.
Furthermore, this installation is part of a larger effort by Delhi Metro to honour the legacy of the Indian Armed Forces. Previous initiatives have included the renaming of select metro stations in homage to prominent military figures, such as Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar and Brigadier Hoshiar Singh stations. Additionally, a permanent exhibition titled “Veerta Aur Vikas” dedicated to gallantry award recipients has been curated at the Rajouri Garden Metro station. This exhibit serves as a testament to the unwavering courage of the armed forces, reflecting their role in preserving India’s sovereignty and dignity.
In 2023, the Modi government furthered its commitment to recognising these heroes by naming 21 previously unnamed islands in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands after each of the Param Vir Chakra awardees. This action complements the broader national effort to ensure that the contributions of these brave soldiers are never forgotten. The Delhi Metro’s latest initiative is more than just an art installation; it is a celebration of the values of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism that unite India. By transforming metro stations into spaces of remembrance, DMRC has created a platform where the history of the nation’s bravest men and women can be honoured and cherished by millions. As commuters rush through their daily routines, they are now afforded the opportunity to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom and security, inspiring them to carry forward the legacy of selfless dedication and national pride.
