India’s capital city metro operator is preparing to step onto the global stage after creating a dedicated international subsidiary aimed at pursuing overseas urban transport projects. The move is designed to position the organisation as a global consultant and project participant in metro rail development, reflecting the growing demand for large-scale transit infrastructure across emerging cities. The newly created entity, Delhi Metro International Limited, will focus on bidding for international metro rail projects while offering technical advisory services in planning, construction and operations of mass transit systems. Officials involved in the initiative say the subsidiary will enable the organisation to engage directly in global infrastructure tenders rather than limiting its role to advisory assignments.
The creation of a specialised international arm reflects a broader shift among infrastructure agencies in Asia, where organisations with strong project delivery experience are increasingly exporting technical expertise to cities developing rapid transit networks. Industry analysts say the Delhi Metro International Limited structure could allow the metro operator to channel its experience from building and running one of the world’s largest urban rail systems into international markets. The metro operator has already participated in overseas assignments in a limited capacity. For instance, it has provided technical assistance for metro development in South Asia, where local authorities sought expertise in system design and operational management. In addition, the organisation has been shortlisted in pre-bid stages for metro construction initiatives in the Middle East, while also examining potential opportunities in Africa and Southeast Asia. Urban transport specialists note that many rapidly growing cities face challenges in developing high-capacity transit systems due to limited technical expertise. Metro rail systems require complex coordination between civil engineering, signalling systems, rolling stock and operational planning. Agencies with experience in managing such integrated networks are therefore increasingly sought after by governments seeking to modernise their public transport infrastructure.
Beyond bidding for rail projects, the international subsidiary is expected to focus on consultancy services and urban mobility solutions connected to mass rapid transit systems.
