Delhi Metro Golden Line expansion promises faster urban travel connectivity

Delhi Metro to Connect T1 and T3 in 10 Minutes with Golden Line Expansion Delhi is preparing for a transformative leap in airport connectivity as plans for a direct metro link between Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport have been finalised. The integration, part of the Delhi Metro’s Golden Line expansion, will allow passengers to travel between the two terminals in under 10 minutes via Aerocity, significantly easing domestic and international transfers.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) confirms that the upcoming Golden Line will connect T1 directly with Aerocity station, where passengers already access the Airport Express Line to reach T3. This strategic intervention will ensure seamless transit for flyers switching between international and domestic flights, a long-standing challenge at one of the world’s busiest airports. Officials involved in the project highlight that this integration will serve not only convenience but also sustainability by cutting down the dependency on private cabs and shuttle services, thereby lowering carbon emissions.

At present, connectivity between the two terminals remains fragmented. T3 is linked to Aerocity through the high-speed Airport Express Line, while T1 is accessible via the Magenta Line, leaving passengers to rely on road transport for terminal transfers. The upcoming Golden Line extension closes this gap, creating a unified, high-capacity metro corridor for airport users.Urban transport experts see this as a critical step in Delhi’s broader ambition to shift towards a zero-carbon mobility ecosystem.

The Golden Line, running from Tughlakabad to Aerocity, is already under construction as part of Phase IV of the Delhi Metro expansion. Integrating T1 is expected to enhance the Golden Line’s strategic relevance by making Aerocity a hub for both domestic and international travellers.Airport planners initially proposed the linkage years ago, but it remained shelved until passenger volumes and sustainability imperatives brought the matter back to the fore.

With rising demand for green infrastructure, the revived DPR now reflects Delhi’s urban mobility priorities  building seamless, multimodal, and eco-conscious transport networks.According to experts, once operational, the T1-T3 metro link could reduce thousands of daily road trips between terminals. This will not only save time for passengers but also contribute to Delhi’s climate resilience agenda by reducing traffic congestion and vehicular emissions around the airport. For a city where transport contributes significantly to air pollution, this expansion is a decisive step towards equitable and sustainable urban living. The proposal now awaits final clearances before construction begins, with stakeholders optimistic that the project will be executed within the broader Phase IV timeline. If delivered as planned, Delhi could soon boast one of the most integrated airport metro systems globally, placing its public transport network firmly on the map of modern, green, and future-ready cities.
