Delhi Metro Completes Key Tunnel Milestone

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully completed an 865-metre tunnel segment between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir stations on the ongoing Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor. This milestone was achieved on Wednesday, marking a critical advancement in the project’s timeline.

The completion of this tunnel was celebrated in the presence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, who were on-site to witness the breakthrough of the 97-metre-long Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This TBM played a crucial role in excavating the tunnel, which now forms part of the dual parallel circular tunnels planned for the corridor. The DMRC has outlined that the tunnel was constructed at an average depth of approximately 15 metres. This depth was chosen to ensure stability and safety while crossing under the existing Yellow Line viaduct. The completion of this section of the tunnel required precise engineering to avoid disrupting metro operations on the established line above.

The Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor project involves constructing two parallel tunnels for bidirectional movement, with one tunnel now completed. The DMRC has projected that the parallel tunnel in this segment will be finalised by September. This completion is a vital step towards enhancing connectivity within Delhi, as the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor is set to significantly ease travel across the city.

This progress not only highlights the technical advancements in metro construction but also reflects the commitment to improving urban transport infrastructure. The successful integration of new tunnels into the existing metro network will facilitate smoother and more efficient travel for Delhi’s growing population, addressing the increasing demand for reliable public transport solutions.
