Delhi Meerut Expressway Upgraded With Rs 18 Crore Safety Measures

New Delhi: The Delhi–Meerut Expressway (DME), a critical corridor for commuters and freight traffic, is set to undergo a significant Rs 18 crore safety and infrastructure enhancement, according to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials. The project, aimed at improving traffic flow and protecting personnel, comes in the wake of a tragic accident that highlighted existing hazards at entry and exit points.

The comprehensive plan will focus on a 15-kilometre stretch and includes the installation of fencing on both sides, upgraded signage, automatic number plate recognition cameras in underpasses, and traffic booths at all major entry and exit points. Officials confirmed that once final designs are cleared, the work is expected to be completed within seven to eight months.Safety concerns have mounted following a recent fatal incident where a traffic constable lost his life near IPEM College while monitoring expressway access. The police have since called for stricter measures to prevent unauthorized vehicles, particularly two-wheelers and tractors, from entering the high-speed corridor. Authorities are also planning movable barriers and dedicated police booths to reduce the risk to personnel while maintaining smooth traffic flow.

The DME, which connects key industrial and residential hubs, has several critical entry and exit points, including Bhojpur, Dasna, IPEM College, and ABES College. Officials emphasized that the newly constructed entry points are designed to handle high traffic volumes, and the measures are meant to complement infrastructure with operational safety protocols.Traffic police personnel have also raised concerns over peak-hour congestion and festival-period surges, highlighting the need for better monitoring systems. The NHAI’s integration of technology-driven solutions, including automatic number plate readers and strategic traffic booths, is expected to mitigate these challenges and enhance commuter safety.

The initiative reflects a broader push by Indian authorities to modernize national highways with a focus on safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance, ensuring the corridors remain sustainable and secure for both daily commuters and long-haul logistics traffic. Officials noted that this intervention is part of ongoing collaborations between highway authorities and law enforcement agencies to proactively address potential hazards on expressways. With growing traffic volumes on the Delhi–Meerut route, these upgrades are likely to reduce accidents, streamline vehicle flow, and provide a model for future safety interventions on other national highways.
