Delhi MCD Mega March In Rohini Promotes Clean Green Future

Delhi witnessed a powerful show of civic resolve this weekend as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) organised a mega march in Rohini Zone under its flagship drive “Delhi Ko Koode Se Azadi”. The mobilisation, which brought together officials, students, sanitation staff and local residents, placed the spotlight on the urgent need for cleaner streets, waste segregation, and sustainable urban living.

The event was part of the corporation’s ongoing campaign to promote a zero-waste future and instil a behavioural shift towards responsible consumption and disposal. According to officials, the Rohini march is one of the largest citizen-driven cleanliness drives in recent years and forms a critical part of the city’s broader ambition of building an eco-friendly and carbon-neutral future. The participation of large student groups was particularly significant, underlining the generational responsibility to adopt sustainable practices early. Street plays and cultural performances, including folk art from Haryana, were staged to draw attention to waste reduction and recycling. Experts observed that using art and performance helped bridge gaps between policy initiatives and everyday citizens, turning environmental messages into community action.

Civic officials leading the campaign emphasised that the fight against waste is no longer limited to sanitation workers alone but requires collective participation. They noted that Delhi generates more than 11,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, of which a significant portion continues to end up in landfills. Initiatives such as door-to-door waste segregation, recycling hubs, and awareness marches are intended to gradually reduce the dependence on dumping grounds and align with India’s national commitments towards sustainability.Environmental planners explained that such campaigns must be tied with long-term investments in waste-to-energy projects, composting facilities, and circular economy models to deliver lasting impact. They stressed that public engagement, particularly through students and neighbourhood communities, remains the most effective way to enforce change at scale.

The campaign’s emphasis on inclusivity and gender neutrality was also evident in the diverse participation at the march. Civic experts highlighted that clean and safe public spaces are central to building equitable cities, where access to basic services is shared across all social groups. The call for cleaner neighbourhoods, they said, cannot be separated from larger issues of urban health, climate resilience, and quality of life. While the march was celebratory in its format, it carried a serious undertone: Delhi’s waste challenge is among the largest in Asia, and incremental awareness must evolve into systemic reform. By turning the spotlight on everyday citizen responsibility and institutional accountability, the campaign has signalled that the road to a sustainable Delhi is long, but collective action is the only path forward.
