The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has approved a major platform expansion project at 32 metro stations across Delhi-NCR to tackle overcrowding and improve commuter safety. The decision aims to create smoother passenger movement and enhance operational efficiency across one of India’s busiest urban transit systems. The move comes as part of DMRC’s broader urban mobility upgradation plan, aligning with the national goal of promoting sustainable and accessible public transport for growing metropolitan populations.
Officials confirmed that a tender worth ₹5.71 crore has been floated for the platform extension works, which are expected to be completed within a year.
Relief For Commuters On Busy CorridorsThe platform extensions will primarily cover stations on the Blue Line the most congested route in the network including Noida Sector-15, Sector-16, Sector-18, Golf Course, and Noida City Centre. East Delhi stations such as Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, and Preet Vihar have also been selected, as they frequently experience peak-hour rush.
According to a senior DMRC official, the extensions will accommodate longer trains and help regulate boarding and deboarding times, reducing congestion on both platforms and inside coaches. “The project will significantly enhance passenger comfort and ensure safer, faster metro journeys across high-density stations,” the official said.Work To Begin After Tender Closure The tender process, which opened on October 24, will remain active until November 17. Technical bids are scheduled for November 18, followed by an online pre-bid meeting on October 31. Construction is likely to begin in December, with completion expected within twelve months from the start date.
Officials stated that the expansion will support the introduction of additional train coaches, thereby increasing carrying capacity and enabling the metro to cater to Delhi’s rapidly growing ridership.A Sustainable Step Towards Better ConnectivityThe Delhi Metro currently operates 10 corridors across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, serving millions daily. As one of India’s greenest transport systems, the initiative also contributes to sustainable mobility by encouraging more people to switch from private vehicles to public transport, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion.
Urban transport experts believe that such infrastructure upgrades are essential for maintaining Delhi’s position as a model for efficient and eco-friendly public transit. The extension, they added, will not only improve passenger convenience but also strengthen the metro’s ability to serve future expansion plans linked to regional rapid transit systems. With this development, DMRC continues to reinforce its commitment to enhancing safety, accessibility, and sustainability in the capital’s transport infrastructure.
