Delhi Launches ₹264 Crore Mundka Development Works
The Government of Delhi today laid the foundation for a ₹264 crore package of development projects in the Mundka Assembly constituency, a move officials say will bring overdue infrastructure upgrades to rural parts of the capital and bridge long-standing gaps in basic services and connectivity.
The announcement comes against a backdrop of intensified efforts to integrate peri-urban and rural communities into the broader urban growth narrative of the National Capital Territory. At an event in Mundka, senior officials highlighted a slate of 49 infrastructure works focused on improving road networks, drinking water supply, sewerage systems, traffic management, education and healthcare facilities across Mundka and its surrounding villages. The projects are part of a larger rural development thrust in Delhi that has seen roughly ₹1,600 crore invested in villages over the past year.
Civic planners and rural development experts view these works as a tangible shift in how the capital treats its non-urban constituencies. Historically, villages within the territorial boundaries of Delhi have faced infrastructure deficits — often characterised by narrow roads, inadequate drainage, intermittent water supply and limited civic services — relative to more central urban wards. The current programme represents a strategic effort to address these disparities with a targeted investment package that aligns with broader equitable growth goals. Officials observed that the Mundka package is funded through a combination of resources, including the Delhi Village Development Board (DVDB), Chief Minister’s Development Fund (CMDF) and the MLA Local Area Development Fund (MLALAD). This diversified financing approach seeks to maximise local impact and ensure that project delivery is closely linked with constituency-level needs.
Key components include the construction and rehabilitation of village roads to improve last-mile connectivity, expansion of sewerage networks to reduce environmental health risks, and augmentation of drinking water supply systems. Upgrades to school buildings and healthcare dispensaries are also part of the package, reflecting an effort to strengthen essential social infrastructure alongside physical connectivity. From an economic and social perspective, improved rural infrastructure can have cascading benefits. Better roads reduce travel time and transport costs, facilitating smoother access to jobs, markets and services both within Delhi and into neighbouring industrial hubs. Modernised sewerage and water systems improve public health outcomes, a critical factor in community well-being and productivity.
