Delhi jolted by strong tremors as 4.4 magnitude earthquake hits Jhajjar in Haryana
Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) were shaken by strong tremors on Thursday morning following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Jhajjar in Haryana at 9:04 AM. The quake, though brief, caused a wave of alarm across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, with residents quickly reacting to the sudden jolts that rattled buildings and homes. The seismic event added to an already chaotic week for the region, which had only just begun recovering from heavy rains and widespread waterlogging a day earlier.
According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Jhajjar, roughly 60 kilometres from Delhi. The tremors were not just limited to Delhi-NCR but were also felt across various towns in Haryana, including Sonipat, Rohtak, and Hisar. Although there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the sudden nature of the quake left many residents unsettled.
People took to social media platform X to share their experiences and visuals of their surroundings during the tremors. Several videos showed household items shaking, while others captured people evacuating buildings in a rush. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on the NCR’s vulnerability to seismic activity, given its location in seismic zone IV, an area known for moderate to high earthquake risk.
Officials from disaster management authorities confirmed that emergency protocols were reviewed and that no serious consequences were reported. Nonetheless, they urged residents to remain alert and to follow safety guidelines in the event of aftershocks.
The earthquake struck just a day after torrential rains caused widespread disruption in Delhi-NCR, including traffic jams, flooding in low-lying areas, and disrupted public services. The double blow of natural events has intensified concerns around urban preparedness in the capital and its neighbouring regions.
