The city’s administration has mandated the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to significantly accelerate waste processing operations at the Ghazipur landfill. This directive follows concerns over the sluggish pace of waste disposal, which has left over 160 lakh tonnes of legacy waste across the city’s three primary landfills: Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa.
During a recent high-level review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, officials from the MCD and the Urban Development Department were instructed to implement round-the-clock waste disposal activities at all three landfill sites. To facilitate this, the number of modern waste-processing machines will be increased, and their operational efficiency enhanced. The aim is to double the current pace of waste disposal, ensuring that the city’s waste management infrastructure operates on a war footing.
In addition to immediate waste disposal measures, the administration has emphasised the expansion of waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. Existing facilities at Okhla and Tehkhand are set for capacity enhancements, while new WtE plants are planned for Narela and Ghazipur. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to not only manage existing waste but also to prevent future accumulation by converting waste into energy.
The MCD has also been directed to prepare a comprehensive plan for the beneficial use of the landfill sites post-waste removal. This includes exploring possibilities for transforming these areas into public spaces or other community-benefiting projects. Furthermore, a three-month special cleanliness campaign will be launched across Delhi to improve sanitation systems and promote a cleaner environment.
These measures underscore the administration’s commitment to addressing the city’s waste challenges and moving towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly urban environment. By enhancing waste processing capabilities and expanding energy recovery initiatives, Delhi aims to transform its waste management landscape and set a precedent for other cities grappling with similar issues.
