Delhi Gurugram Expressway Tunnel Aims to Ease Traffic

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced trial runs on a newly constructed tunnel connecting the Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and National Highway 48 (NH-48).

This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a more efficient route between Delhi and Gurugram. The tunnel comprises two parts: a 3.6-kilometre, eight-lane section linking the Dwarka Expressway to IGI Airport, and a 1.5-kilometre, two-lane section connecting to NH-48 towards Gurugram. The tunnel is designed to accommodate heavy traffic, with an expected daily volume of approximately 40,000 vehicles. It features state-of-the-art safety measures, including emergency exits and a dedicated control room.

The trial runs began on May 29, 2025, and are scheduled daily from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. These trials are essential to assess vehicle movement, traffic density, and flow patterns before the full-scale opening planned for June 5, 2025. Data collected during these trials will be analysed to determine if any adjustments are necessary to ensure optimal performance upon full operation. Once operational, the tunnel is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Gurugram, particularly benefiting commuters travelling to and from IGI Airport. The new route is anticipated to ease congestion on NH-48, providing a more direct and efficient path for airport-bound traffic. Incorporating elements of regional culture, the tunnel’s walls are adorned with colourful murals showcasing the heritage of various states such as Punjab, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Manipur. This artistic endeavour not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the tunnel but also reflects the diverse cultural tapestry of India.

The completion of this tunnel marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the Delhi NCR region. It is part of a broader initiative under the Bharatmala project, which aims to enhance transportation networks across the country. The successful implementation of this tunnel serves as a model for integrating innovative engineering solutions with sustainable urban planning to create a more efficient and livable city.
