Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor to Add Parking for Nearly 2,000 Vehicles

The much-anticipated Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor is set to enhance commuter convenience by introducing significant parking facilities across its stations. This development is expected to ease the burden on existing transport infrastructure, offering parking for 1,500 two-wheelers and 400 four-wheelers in Delhi alone.

The ongoing initiative reflects a broader vision to make public transport more user-friendly, catering not just to commuters using the trains but also to those driving to the stations. In line with this, parking spaces will be made available at multiple key locations along the 82 km corridor. Additionally, commuters will be able to track the availability of parking spaces in real time through the RRTS Connect app, a modern solution that ensures smoother transit and better management of public infrastructure. At present, parking facilities for 550 two-wheelers and 200 cars are operational at two major stations—New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar. However, the upcoming Sarai Kale Khan RRTS station is set to offer much more. It will feature parking spaces for 900 two-wheelers and 275 four-wheelers, making it a critical hub for local commuters in the future. The new parking features are designed to complement the convenience and efficiency of the corridor. These stations will not only accommodate vehicles but also aim to reduce congestion, giving commuters a reliable option to park their vehicles before switching to the rapid transit system.

One of the standout aspects of this project is the inclusion of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at various locations. This environmentally conscious addition supports the government’s broader push for sustainable, cleaner last-mile connectivity options. As more people shift towards electric vehicles, having readily available charging stations at transport hubs will undoubtedly encourage the use of cleaner transport options. The addition of parking facilities forms a part of a wider vision to encourage the use of public transport in the region, particularly for short-distance commutes. The integration of the RRTS with other transport systems like the Delhi Metro, city buses, and local rail stations is a key factor in this plan. Sarai Kale Khan station, which is expected to open by June 2025, will be a pivotal point in this multimodal network. Strategically located near major transport hubs like the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, the Veer Haqiqat Rai ISBT, and a Delhi Metro Pink Line station, it will provide easy transfers for passengers from one mode of transport to another, significantly improving connectivity across the city.

To manage the parking spaces effectively, the RRTS corridor will implement a structured fee system. For example, bicycles can park for free for up to 10 minutes, with a nominal fee applied thereafter. Two-wheelers and cars will follow a similar pricing structure, with the first 10 minutes also free of charge. The fees will range from Rs 5 for bicycles to Rs 100 for cars, depending on the parking duration. Additionally, night parking will be available for a fee, ensuring commuters have flexible options regardless of travel times. The pricing system aims to balance affordability while maintaining the quality of services for all users. With 55 km of the corridor already operational, and an additional 27 km expected to be added soon, the RRTS project is well on its way to transforming how people travel between Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. When completed, it will not only reduce travel times significantly but also promote a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport in one of India’s most populous regions. As the project progresses, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is committed to improving the commuter experience, ensuring that the RRTS corridor is more than just a transportation system—it becomes a model for efficient, user-friendly urban transit in India.
