Delhi Gets New Automated Vehicle Testing Station In Nand Nagri
New Delhi’s Chief Minister on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art, fully automated vehicle testing station at the Delhi Transport Corporation Nand Nagri Depot. This significant infrastructure addition in northeast Delhi is poised to test 72,000 vehicles annually, marking a substantial expansion of the capital’s inspection capabilities. The facility aims to bridge a critical gap in existing infrastructure, addressing the high demand for fitness certifications among commercial vehicles that currently rely on centers outside the city. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing urban transport services.
Delhi presently has approximately 4.5 lakh commercial vehicles that require mandatory annual fitness certification. However, the sole existing automated testing station in Jhuljhuli, located in southwest Delhi, can accommodate only around 47,919 vehicles per year. Consequently, a considerable number of vehicles, including trucks, buses, pick-up vans, goods carriers, and taxis, must undergo their fitness tests in facilities situated outside Delhi. The new ATS at Nand Nagri is strategically designed to address this deficit, providing much-needed relief to countless vehicle owners, particularly those residing in the trans-Yamuna region. Officials estimate that this additional center will generate a minimum annual revenue of 3 crore, which currently flows to neighboring states, thus boosting local earnings for the Delhi Transport Corporation.
The new Automated Testing Station is engineered to be fully digital and free from human intervention, ensuring enhanced transparency and fairness in the inspection process. It will feature a robust four-lane system, including two dedicated lanes for heavy motor vehicles, one for light motor vehicles, and another specifically for two-wheelers. The center will conduct advanced testing procedures suchalling comprehensive emission testing, precise roller brakes assessments, thorough suspension inspections for both front and rear axles, detailed underbody checks, and accurate headlight alignment. With its annual capacity of 72,000 vehicles, including 20,000 two-wheelers, the project, costing an estimated 10 crore, aims to significantly improve road safety, control pollution, and promote a modern transport system. Furthermore, plans for another ATS at the DTC Tehkhand Depot in south-east Delhi have also been announced to further bolster the city’s vehicle testing infrastructure.
The establishment of this automated testing station represents a pivotal step in Delhi’s urban development strategy. By enhancing transparency, road safety, and pollution control, it provides significant relief to vehicle owners and supports a modern, efficient transport system. This initiative underscores the government’s resolve to invest in digital infrastructure for sustainable and accountable public services, benefiting millions of residents.
