Delhi took a decisive step towards building a sustainable transport ecosystem this week with the rollout of the first batch of 950 electric buses. The induction of these new vehicles underlines the capital’s commitment to green mobility and further strengthens its position as the Indian city with the largest fleet of clean-energy buses.
The electric buses, manufactured in India, have been introduced under the Department of Transport’s order placed through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL). Officials described the deployment as a milestone in urban mobility, reflecting the city’s broader vision of reducing carbon emissions and providing safer, cleaner, and more reliable public transport. The newly launched 12-metre low-floor buses have been specifically designed to cater to city commuters. Each bus can seat 39 passengers and is equipped with accessibility-friendly features such as wheelchair ramps, along with modern safety tools including CCTV cameras, panic buttons, and GPS-enabled tracking. Transport officials stressed that these measures align with the government’s focus on inclusive, gender-sensitive, and technology-driven mobility solutions.
A significant innovation in these vehicles lies in their engineering. The buses are powered by floor-mounted LFP batteries, a design that enhances stability and reduces safety risks. Each bus is also fitted with a fire detection and suppression system, reinforcing the administration’s emphasis on safety while transitioning to sustainable alternatives. In addition, the fleet is integrated with a smart telematics platform called Switch iON, which enables real-time monitoring of vehicle health and intelligent fleet management. According to experts present at the launch, such digital integration is crucial to maximising efficiency and ensuring reduced downtime. The buses are also supported by dual-gun charging infrastructure that enables faster turnaround times at depots, an important factor given Delhi’s high passenger load.
For years, Delhi’s public transport network has struggled to keep pace with rising demand, congestion, and air pollution. The rollout of these electric buses marks a structural change in how the capital approaches mass transit. Beyond environmental benefits, the transition promises quieter commutes, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and long-term operational savings. Officials added that this is only the beginning of a phased plan to introduce a large number of electric buses into the city’s public fleet over the coming months. As Delhi strives to become a model for sustainable cities, the focus remains on integrating clean mobility with inclusive design and efficient urban planning.
The rollout also echoes India’s national push towards net zero commitments, aligning with broader goals of reducing vehicular emissions and rethinking urban commuting models. While challenges remain in scaling infrastructure, charging facilities, and financing, Delhi’s latest step underscores the growing momentum towards greener cities and more equitable mobility systems.
