Delhi Dehradun Expressway, a 210-kilometre greenfield project, is set to open in January 2025.
This expressway aims to significantly reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from approximately 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours, enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activities in the region. Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹13,000 crore, the expressway is being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana and is managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The project passes through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, covering towns such as Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur.
One of the standout features of the expressway is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The project includes Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor, spanning 12 kilometres over the Rajaji National Park. This elevated corridor aims to protect local wildlife by allowing animals to cross the expressway safely, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and preserving biodiversity. In addition to the wildlife corridor, the expressway boasts several other eco-friendly and safety features. These include 113 underpasses, five railway overbridges, and 62 bus shelters. The design also incorporates green zones along the route, contributing to the overall environmental balance.
The expressway is divided into four phases, with Phase 1 and Phase 4 nearing completion. Phase 2, covering a length of 118 kilometres, is divided into four packages, with Package 1 expected to be completed by January 2026. The final phase aims to connect the expressway seamlessly to Dehradun, providing a smooth and uninterrupted journey for commuters. The opening of the Delhi Dehradun Expressway is expected to have a profound impact on the region. It will not only reduce travel time but also stimulate tourism and economic activities in Uttarakhand. Improved logistics and freight movement between northern states will further enhance the region’s connectivity and economic prospects.
As the final legal hurdles are cleared and construction progresses, the Delhi Dehradun Expressway stands poised to transform travel and connectivity in northern India, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure development.
