Delhi Chief Minister is set to launch a pilot project to shift overhead electricity wires underground in Shalimar Bagh’s BH Block Janta Flats colony on Saturday. This significant initiative, part of a ₹100 crore allocation in the 2025-26 budget, aims to enhance urban safety, improve aesthetics, and boost the reliability of power supply, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable city infrastructure.
The project, spearheaded by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), will serve as a scalable model for potential phased implementation across other parts of the city. Officials state the primary objective is to replace existing overhead wires with underground cabling, which will dramatically increase aesthetics and safety in densely populated localities. Power Minister Ashish Sood is expected to accompany the Chief Minister at the launch.
The shifting work involves removing five kilometres of overhead lines and installing 10 kilometres of low-tension (LT) and 1.2 kilometres of high-tension (HT) underground cabling. Additionally, 23 new feeder pillar boxes will be installed. This upgrade is anticipated to provide residents with 24×7 electricity supply in all weather conditions, significantly reducing faults often caused by thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Beyond improved reliability, underground cables will free up valuable space above ground, enhancing the visual appeal of neighbourhoods and removing obstructions for trees, buildings, and traffic. This forward-looking urban planning directly supports the development of eco-friendly and more equitably accessible public spaces.
The pilot project marks a crucial step towards modernising Delhi’s power infrastructure. It promises enhanced safety, reliable electricity, and improved urban aesthetics, setting a benchmark for future city-wide upgrades aimed at fostering a more sustainable and resilient urban environment.
