The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has set up dedicated payment counters at key locations, including Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place in Gole Market, Palika Bhawan in RK Puram, and Palika Kendra on Sansad Marg. These counters will accept payments from residents, service users, and those with pending utility bills.
Additionally, NDMC’s headquarters at Palika Kendra will remain operational over the weekend to facilitate easy transactions. Taxpayers are also encouraged to make payments online, offering greater convenience.
The NDMC has set an ambitious target of collecting Rs 1,150 crore in service tax for the current financial year and has already surpassed Rs 1,000 crore. To recover dues, the council has issued over 400 show-cause notices to defaulters, recovering approximately Rs 60 crore from 80 individuals who had not paid taxes for two to three years.
Simultaneously, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is extending its property tax collection efforts through the weekend. As of now, the MCD has collected Rs 2,054 crore against its annual target of Rs 4,000 crore. To enforce compliance, the MCD has attached 88 properties and 87 bank accounts across 12 zones, recovering Rs 25.7 crore.
Officials from both civic bodies expressed optimism that the extended office hours would ease the payment process, reduce taxpayer inconvenience, and help achieve financial targets. Property owners are urged to clear their dues by March 31 to avoid penalties.
In a bid to enhance efficiency and curb evasion, the MCD has geo-tagged over 4 lakh properties as part of a broader digital transformation initiative. This move is in line with the city’s push for greater transparency and improved tax administration. From the next financial year, geo-tagging will be mandatory, with no exemptions, ensuring that every property is accounted for in the tax system.
Experts argue that the digitisation of property tax systems and strict compliance measures will not only improve revenue generation but also contribute to better urban governance. They highlight that effective tax administration is crucial for funding sustainable urban infrastructure, including eco-friendly initiatives aligned with Delhi’s green city goals.
As the financial year draws to a close, these intensified efforts reflect the civic bodies’ commitment to strengthening Delhi’s fiscal health while promoting accountability and transparency in public financial management.
