Delhi Braces For More Rain As IMD Issues Red Alert Amid Heavy Showers And Waterlogging

Delhi is facing severe weather disruptions as the India Meteorological Department upgraded its warning from an orange alert to a red alert, signaling extreme rainfall across the National Capital Region. On Wednesday evening, the city witnessed heavy downpours between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm, with areas like Najafgarh receiving 60 mm of rain, followed by Aya Nagar at 50.5 mm and Pragati Maidan at 37 mm. The sudden intensity of the rainfall overwhelmed forecasts and city infrastructure alike.

The consequences were swift and chaotic. Roads in key zones such as Gurugram, Nehru Place, Aurobindo Marg, Lajpat Nagar, and the Chirag Delhi flyover were heavily waterlogged, leading to traffic gridlocks and raising concerns about the city’s preparedness for monsoon conditions. Social media lit up with commentary on flooded basements in luxury homes and worsening drainage systems, painting a picture of civic infrastructure failing under pressure.

Despite the widespread rainfall, the primary Safdarjung observatory registered a mere 1.4 mm, highlighting the stark micro-climate variability in Delhi. The humidity level spiked to 81 percent, intensifying discomfort for residents already battling mobility issues due to submerged roads. National Highway 8 also faced disruptions, compounding the travel woes of thousands.

With the red alert expected to remain in effect, the IMD has warned of continued moderate to intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Authorities have urged residents to stay updated, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain vigilant as the unpredictable weather persists.
