After a spell of overnight showers on Sunday, Delhi experienced light to moderate rainfall in several parts through Monday, with isolated areas such as Najafgarh receiving heavy downpours. According to officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital can expect similar weather to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, with a yellow alert issued for the next 24 hours.
The rainfall, though largely moderate across the city, brought much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat while simultaneously intensifying humidity levels. Safdarjung, Delhi’s base observatory, recorded 11.8 mm of rain in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on Monday, while areas like Palam and Lodhi Road logged 20.8 mm and 13.5 mm, respectively. Najafgarh stood out, recording a significant 95 mm of rainfall. Despite the relief in temperature, the IMD noted that humidity levels soared between 57% and 100%, contributing to muggy conditions. A senior IMD expert confirmed that moderate rainfall will likely continue through Wednesday, with the monsoon trough remaining active near Delhi. Showers are expected to be more frequent during the night or early morning hours.
The rainfall caused minor waterlogging in several areas, including Mehrauli Badarpur Road and Rohtak Road, where ongoing sewer and road works further slowed traffic. Authorities have advised caution, especially during peak commuting hours. Weather data indicates that temperatures remained below the seasonal average, with the maximum temperature at Safdarjung hovering around 35 degrees Celsius. This cooling trend is expected to persist over the next couple of days. Delhi’s southwest monsoon officially arrived on June 29, with 14 mm of rainfall recorded within the first 24 hours. While July typically receives an average of 209.7 mm of rainfall, meteorological experts anticipate a normal to slightly below-normal monsoon pattern this week.
With scattered showers expected to continue into the weekend, authorities are maintaining preparedness to manage potential urban flooding. As part of efforts to build climate-resilient infrastructure, officials reiterated the importance of timely desilting and drainage maintenance.
