Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has commenced a 90-day closure of Runway 10/28, effective from June 15 to September 15, 2025. This strategic move aims to upgrade the runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) to Category III-B (CAT III-B) standards, enhancing aircraft landing capabilities during low-visibility conditions, particularly addressing the challenges posed by Delhi’s dense winter fog.
The closure is expected to impact approximately 200 flights daily, encompassing both cancellations and rescheduled services. According to the airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), 114 daily flights will be cancelled, and 86 will be rescheduled to accommodate the reduced runway capacity. This adjustment corresponds to an 8% reduction in daily flight operations, aligning with the airport’s capacity constraints during the closure period. The timing of the runway closure has been meticulously planned to coincide with the low-traffic summer months, following the peak tourist season. This scheduling aims to mitigate the impact on passenger traffic and ensure smoother operations during the upgrade process.
Additionally, the prevailing westerly wind patterns during this period are expected to facilitate optimal utilization of the remaining operational runways, thereby minimizing disruptions. DIAL has coordinated with airlines to implement necessary adjustments, including the suspension of certain flights and rescheduling of others, to manage the reduced runway capacity effectively. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight schedules and to allow extra time for potential delays. The primary objective of upgrading Runway 10/28 to CAT III-B standards is to enhance the airport’s capability to handle landings in low-visibility conditions. The CAT III-B ILS upgrade will enable pilots to land safely even when visibility is significantly reduced, thereby reducing the risk of delays and diversions during Delhi’s notorious foggy winter months. Upon completion, the runway will be fully equipped to handle low-visibility operations from both ends, improving operational efficiency and safety.
