Delhi Airport Offers Live Kathak, Bharatanatyam and Sitar Recitals For Travelers
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) has launched a pioneering initiative, “DEL Vibes,” transforming passenger transit into an enriching cultural journey. Commencing this Monday, the program introduces daily live performances of Indian classical dance and music, alongside interactive craft workshops, across all terminals. This unique endeavour by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) aims to provide both domestic and international travellers with an authentic glimpse into India’s vibrant heritage, significantly enhancing the overall airport experience and fostering a more engaging and serene environment amidst the hustle of air travel.
The “DEL Vibes” program is meticulously curated, featuring performances of classical dance forms such as Kathak and Bharatanatyam, alongside instrumental recitals showcasing traditional Indian instruments like the tar shehnai, santoor, sitar, and sarangi. These performances are scheduled daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, with dedicated segments for dance (10-15 minutes), live music (20-25 minutes), and interactive craft experiences (15 minutes). The sessions are thoughtfully interspersed with engaging segments led by emcees, ensuring continuous passenger interaction and guidance through the diverse cultural offerings.
Beyond mere entertainment, this initiative holds a deeper purpose, aligning with broader goals of promoting well-being and cultural understanding in urban spaces. For many first-time flyers or those with long layovers, airport environments can be a source of stress and anxiety. IGI has long showcased India’s rich heritage through various static art installations, including twelve mudra sculptures at Terminal 3 and a 12-foot Surya Namaskar statue, alongside murals and paintings by contemporary artists. “DEL Vibes” builds upon this foundation by introducing dynamic, live performances, effectively bringing the country’s performing arts to the forefront of the airport experience. This holistic approach ensures that international visitors, in particular, embark on a visual and sensory journey through Indian culture from the moment they arrive.
