Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), ranked among the top ten globally with nearly 78 million passengers in 2024, is undertaking a significant six-month redevelopment of its Terminal 2.
This ambitious project, spearheaded by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), aims to modernise the facility with a strong emphasis on sustainability, enhanced passenger comfort, and improved operational efficiency, aligning with the vision of creating greener and more equitable urban infrastructure.
A cornerstone of the upgrade is the installation of six cutting-edge passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) sourced from South Korea. These advanced bridges feature autonomous docking technology, which not only streamlines operations but also enhances safety. Critically, they incorporate enhanced wheelchair accessibility, ensuring seamless and dignified boarding for passengers with reduced mobility. Swing doors for operator safety and side-covering cushions for increased passenger security and aesthetic appeal further underscore the focus on both functionality and passenger well-being.
Beyond the immediate boarding process, the redevelopment prioritises the overall passenger experience within the terminal. State-of-the-art HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems will be deployed to provide consistent and comfortable climate control throughout the year, while also ensuring cleaner indoor air quality. This focus on air quality is increasingly important in promoting healthier and more sustainable public spaces. The renovation also includes the integration of an advanced fire safety mechanism, a critical element in ensuring passenger safety and operational resilience.
Visually, Terminal 2 is set for a significant transformation. Plans include the installation of skylight ceilings to maximise natural light, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and contributing to energy efficiency. Modern flooring, smart washrooms designed with water conservation in mind, and improved road connectivity will further enhance the terminal’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. Accessibility remains a key priority, with the integration of a high-resolution flight information display system (FIDS) and clearly marked, Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM)-friendly signage ensuring ease of navigation for all passengers.
Recognising the importance of uninterrupted travel, DIAL has also addressed monsoon preparedness. New canopies at the terminal forecourt will provide dry and seamless access for travellers during the rainy season, mitigating potential disruptions and ensuring a more comfortable journey. The redevelopment extends to the airside, with upgrades planned for apron and operational zones to accommodate increased aircraft movement, reflecting the airport’s commitment to future growth and operational agility.
During the six-month redevelopment period, Terminals 1 and 3 are strategically positioned to absorb the passenger load, minimising disruption to overall airport operations. This carefully planned phasing underscores a commitment to maintaining efficient service while undertaking these crucial upgrades. As DIAL CEO aptly stated, this project is a “need of the hour,” promising to elevate both the operational efficiency of the airport and the overall experience for millions of passengers, paving the way for a more sustainable and passenger-centric aviation hub.
