Delhi Airport Issues Advisory After Sudden Storm

A sudden spell of heavy rain, gusty winds, and hailstorm disrupted normal life across the Delhi-NCR region on Wednesday evening, prompting the Delhi Airport to issue a travel advisory.

The unexpected weather shift provided brief relief from the searing summer heat but led to delays and uncertainty in flight operations. In its advisory, the Delhi Airport warned that thunderstorms and inclement weather could impact flight schedules. “Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” it stated. Air traffic was affected as visibility dropped during peak evening hours. Airport authorities urged travellers to stay updated with their respective airlines for the latest flight status. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a maximum temperature of 40.7 degrees Celsius in the capital, marginally above normal. However, the “feels like” temperature soared to 50.2 degrees Celsius due to high humidity levels, which ranged between 64 and 34 per cent throughout the day.

The sudden storm brought a drop in temperatures and temporary relief for residents who had been battling days of oppressive heat. The IMD defines the “feels like” temperature as the heat index—how hot it actually feels when relative humidity is factored into the air temperature. Strong winds and a dust storm were reported in various pockets of the National Capital Region, with several areas also experiencing hail. Power outages, traffic congestion, and brief internet disruptions were observed in some neighbourhoods. Meteorologists said such sudden weather shifts are not uncommon during pre-monsoon months in northern India, especially when rising temperatures clash with moisture-laden air masses. The IMD has forecast more isolated rainfall activity in the region over the next few days.

As of late Wednesday night, the situation at the airport remained under close monitoring, with airlines adjusting schedules and updating passengers accordingly.
