Residents of Neelankarai and adjoining areas along the East Coast Road (ECR) are facing severe inconvenience as roads, dug up over a year ago for an underground sewer line project, remain in a deplorable state. The protracted delays in completing the sewer network and subsequent road re-laying have rendered numerous stretches impassable, significantly disrupting daily commutes and local commerce. The ambitious underground sewer line project aims to replace reliance on individual septic tanks, a crucial step towards modernising urban sanitation and promoting a more eco-friendly wastewater management system in coastal areas. While affluent enclaves like Casuarina Drive, home to prominent personalities, appear to be exempted from immediate digging, other critical arteries like Blue Beach Road and various internal roads in Marakkayar Nagar and Kapaleeswarar Nagar remain in a pitiable condition. They indicate that work on major stretches like Kapaleeswarar Nagar 4th Main Road is nearing completion and is expected to be handed over to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for road-laying within approximately one month. However, residents express profound frustration over the year-long ordeal, citing not only the direct inconvenience but also the unexpected blocking of alternative routes, such as Casuarina Drive during weekends, which further exacerbates their travel woes.
