Indian Railways has successfully completed the country’s longest double rail tunnel, spanning an impressive 14.58 kilometres, between Devprayag and Janasu. This extensive tunnel forms a critical component of the 125-kilometre Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail line, a project designed to link historically isolated hilly districts including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli, directly to India’s extensive rail network for the very first time. Once fully operational, this rail link is projected to reduce travel time between Rishikesh and Karnprayag from an arduous 7-8 hours by road to a mere two hours, signalling a paradigm shift in accessibility for the region.
