Pune’s urban transport network, a sub-committee has been tasked with finalising a report on the proposed extension of the PMRDA Metro Line 3. This line would stretch from Shivajinagar to Hadapsar-Loni Kalbhor. The report, expected to be tabled within a week, will play a crucial role in determining the future of the metro expansion project.
The directive came during a recent meeting convened by an official from the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA). This meeting, held on Tuesday, included representatives from key bodies such as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Pune Traffic Police, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). The discussions centred on several critical transport projects affecting the Pune region. Key topics included the proposed extensions of the metro lines—particularly the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar to Hadapsar-Loni Kalbhor segment and the Ramwadi-Wagholi stretch—along with addressing traffic congestion on 32 major roads and the Kharadi-Shirur elevated road project.
The official revealed that the sub-committee was established to review a report submitted by a transition advisor appointed by PMRDA. This advisor, who evaluated the metro lines under both public-private partnership (PPP) and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) models, has recommended pursuing a PPP model for the 23-kilometre extension from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor. This recommendation also includes extensions to Pulgate and Swargate.
The transition advisor’s report was completed prior to the Lok Sabha elections, and additional details were provided in a recent briefing. The sub-committee, which includes representatives from Maha-Metro and PMRDA, has been instructed to examine this information thoroughly and submit their findings to PUMTA within the stipulated timeframe. The proposed extension will primarily cover 20 kilometres from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, with an additional 3 kilometres extending to Pulgate and Swargate. The decision on this expansion will significantly impact Pune’s transport infrastructure, aiming to enhance connectivity and alleviate congestion in the region.
