Indian Railways commemorated the remarkable anniversaries of two of its most iconic trains: the Deccan Queen and the Punjab Mail.
The Deccan Queen, a symbol of Maharashtra’s railway heritage, marked 96 years of service, while the Punjab Mail celebrated an impressive 114 years of continuous operation. Launched on June 1, 1930, by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the Deccan Queen was India’s first deluxe train service. Connecting Mumbai and Pune, it revolutionised rail travel with features such as a dining car, women-only compartments, and electric traction. Over the decades, the train has undergone numerous upgrades, including the introduction of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches and Vistadome facilities, ensuring a blend of comfort and scenic views for passengers.
The 96th anniversary was celebrated with enthusiasm at Pune Railway Station, under the leadership of Mrs. Harsha Shah, President of the Railway Pravasi Group. The event featured a cake-cutting ceremony, a vibrant band performance, and the felicitation of the train driver, paying tribute to the Deccan Queen’s enduring legacy. The Punjab Mail, introduced on November 1, 1889, holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously running trains in India. Connecting Mumbai to Ferozepur, it has been a vital link for passengers traversing multiple states. Over its 114-year history, the train has adapted to changing times, incorporating modern amenities while retaining its historical charm.
Both trains are more than mere modes of transportation; they are woven into the cultural and economic fabric of India. The Deccan Queen, in particular, is the only train in the world whose birthday is celebrated annually, reflecting the deep emotional bond it shares with generations of commuters and railway enthusiasts.
