The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has introduced an innovative eco-friendly tent café at the Asita Biodiversity Park, a significant step towards integrating sustainable practices in Delhi’s public spaces. With a seating capacity of 60 to 70 people, this temporary structure will offer visitors pre-cooked meals and beverages in a tranquil setting surrounded by over 200,000 seasonal flowers, including 6,000 tulips. The café’s strategic location atop a mound, near a water body, provides an aesthetically pleasing environment for relaxation and nature appreciation.
What makes this café truly unique is its design, which is entirely constructed from eco-friendly materials to align with the ecological requirements of the Yamuna floodplains. A metal container has been repurposed as the kitchen, and the entire structure is designed for quick disassembly in case of flooding, ensuring it can be removed and reassembled efficiently. This focus on sustainability reinforces the DDA’s commitment to safeguarding the floodplains while enhancing visitor experience in the park.
The new café is part of a broader initiative to create eco-friendly recreational spaces, following the success of Café Stone at Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Café Bamboo Oasis at Baansera. It further highlights the growing trend of integrating nature and urban development, particularly in heavily populated areas like Delhi. The Asita Biodiversity Park itself is a haven for over 70 species of migratory and resident birds, which adds another layer of environmental value to the space.
From a sustainability perspective, the eco-friendly café is just one part of the park’s broader environmental efforts. The DDA, along with civic leaders, has implemented extensive plantation drives under initiatives such as “Ek Ped Maa ke Naam,” which saw 20,000 saplings planted in a single day. These efforts are reshaping Delhi’s urban landscape, showcasing how urban development can co-exist with environmental stewardship.
