The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has conducted a draw for 1,093 households as part of its ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makaan’ (in situ slum rehabilitation) project, which aims to provide housing for economically weaker sections (EWS) and slum dwellers in the city. The project involves the in-situ rehabilitation of 376 Jhuggi Jhopri clusters, and the government hopes to complete the construction of 1,675 EWS flats this year. The apartments will be 400 sq ft, consisting of two rooms, bathroom, kitchen, toilet and balcony. The estimated cost of the rehabilitation project is INR 421.81 crore.
The flats are being built using Mivan technology which ensures that all components of the buildings are made of concrete, making them earthquake-resistant. The flats are made of a complete RCC structure and built over 14 floors, with every tower equipped with a lift and an open recreational space on the eighth floor. About 95 percent of the work on the 1,675 flats meant for rehabilitation has been completed. Of the 1,675 flats being built, 1,093 will be used to rehabilitate slum dwellers from Jailorwala Bagh, while the remaining 582 flats will be allotted to beneficiaries from other locations.
The residential flats have community halls, shops, Anganwadi classrooms, clinic, daycare centre and sewage treatment plant (STP). The project also provides basement parking spanning over an area of 11,024 sq m and surface parking of over 9,257.7 sq m of green space. The rehabilitation project is expected to provide a better and healthy living environment with proper civic amenities and infrastructure to the EWS and slum dwellers of Delhi.
