In a noteworthy celebration of the International Day of Rural Women, Dalmia Bharat Group, a conglomerate in the cement and sugar sectors, announced the empowerment of 18,000 women across India. The empowerment of these women was primarily facilitated through the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which served as a platform for skill development, knowledge enhancement, and access to critical resources required for establishing sustainable livelihoods.
The initiatives encompassed a wide array of training programmes designed to equip rural women with tools they need to thrive. Micro-enterprise development, handicraft production and both farming and non-farming sectors were among the key areas of focus, targeting women in diverse rural communities.
The primary goal of these programmes is to diversify income sources for rural women, thereby reducing their dependency on a single stream of revenue. Dalmia aims to empower these women to engage in various income-generating activities successfully.
Furthermore, these initiatives sought to break down barriers that often hinder rural women from accessing formal credit systems. Access to credit is a vital component of financial independence and empowerment. By connecting rural women to formal credit mechanisms, Dalmia took a significant step toward improving their economic prospects.
