Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the nation’s first 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive engine in Dahod, Gujarat, on May 26, 2025.
This event marks a pivotal moment in the government’s efforts to enhance logistics efficiency and promote indigenous manufacturing under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The 9000 HP locomotive, developed through a public-private partnership, is designed to revolutionize freight transportation by increasing average speeds and reducing congestion on saturated tracks. Capable of hauling up to 4,500 tonnes of cargo at speeds reaching 120 km/h, the new engine is poised to significantly improve the efficiency of freight operations across the country. Manufactured at the upgraded Dahod workshop, the locomotive features state-of-the-art technology, including digital tracking systems and the ‘Kavach’ safety mechanism.
The facility, established in 1926, has been modernized to produce these high-performance engines, with plans to manufacture 1,200 units over the next decade. Each locomotive will bear the label ‘Manufactured by Dahod,’ symbolizing the town’s emergence as a hub for advanced rail engineering. The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, with estimates suggesting the creation of over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Additionally, the Dahod facility is set to serve as a center for export, aligning with India’s broader goals of enhancing its manufacturing capabilities and global competitiveness.
This development aligns with the government’s broader vision of modernizing infrastructure and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly technologies. The introduction of the 9000 HP locomotive is a testament to India’s growing prowess in high-tech manufacturing and its commitment to reducing logistics costs and improving supply chain efficiency.
