Cuddalore Powers Up 450 MW Wind Solar Hybrid Project to Boost Green Energy Drive

Cuddalore-based Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) for developing a 450 MW wind-solar hybrid power project connected to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). This project forms part of NTPC’s wider initiative to procure 1200 MW of hybrid power under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process, with a greenshoe option of an additional 600 MW.

The hybrid system—integrating both wind and solar energy sources—is designed to ensure a minimum annual Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) of 30%, enhancing renewable energy supply while maintaining grid reliability. The power generated will be supplied under a 25-year contract, with delivery expected to begin within 24 months of signing the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

NLCIL stated that the award reaffirms its growing presence in India’s renewable energy sector and supports the company’s strategic goal of achieving 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. In line with implementation flexibility, NLCIL has the option to create a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to manage the project.

NLCIL’s Senior officials, commented on the development, “This significant win from NTPC marks a major milestone in NLCIL’s renewable energy journey. The 450 MW hybrid project not only strengthens our national footprint in green energy but also symbolises our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

The announcement comes as NLCIL also works on a 150 MW wind-solar hybrid project in Gujarat, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Together, the two projects will increase the company’s hybrid power capacity to 600 MW. The Cuddalore-headquartered firm is strategically positioning itself as a leading player in India’s evolving green energy market. With these additions, NLCIL reinforces its shift from traditional lignite operations to future-ready, eco-conscious infrastructure.

As India accelerates its clean energy mission, projects like this underscore the importance of hybrid power generation models that harness the strengths of both solar and wind resources. With land and transmission costs being shared, these systems offer higher efficiency and better returns on investment—critical for large-scale renewable ambitions.

NLCIL’s growing hybrid portfolio is a direct response to the central government’s push for cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions, and showcases the company’s adaptability in the evolving energy landscape. This project not only marks a technological leap but also promises to contribute significantly to India’s energy security and climate goals.
