Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) marked a significant operational milestone on November 21, 2025, by recording 1,036 air traffic movements (ATMs) in a single day, surpassing its previous record of 1,032 ATMs set in November 2023. This achievement underscores the airport’s growing capacity to manage increasing passenger and flight volumes efficiently.
The record coincided with the festive travel surge across India, with Air Traffic Control handling 755 domestic flights and 281 international flights. Overall, the airport facilitated 520 arrivals and 516 departures, accommodating both inbound and outbound movements seamlessly. Passenger movements reached 1.70 lakh, comprising over 1.21 lakh domestic travellers and 48,961 international passengers. Arrival and departure numbers were almost evenly split, with 86,443 arrivals and 84,045 departures recorded, closely matching peak levels seen earlier this year. Domestic traffic was concentrated along high-demand routes, with Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Kolkata accounting for the largest passenger volumes. International routes saw similar growth, particularly to destinations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London Heathrow, Doha, and Jeddah, reflecting both business and leisure travel demand.
CSMIA’s operational success is attributed to recent investments in digital, safety, and efficiency upgrades. Self-baggage drop units, self-check-in kiosks, and wider adoption of DigiYatra and FTI-TTP solutions have streamlined passenger processing across terminals. Meanwhile, the enhanced Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) has strengthened real-time monitoring, coordination among stakeholders, and response times during peak traffic periods. An airport spokesperson said, “This milestone demonstrates CSMIA’s capability to manage growing volumes efficiently. Our focus on safety, on-time operations, and passenger convenience ensures that even peak days are handled seamlessly. These achievements set benchmarks for passenger-centric airport management and operational excellence.”
Industry experts note that rising passenger numbers, particularly during festive seasons, pose operational challenges for airports. CSMIA’s approach to technology-driven process improvement, digital infrastructure, and cross-functional coordination highlights how urban airports can sustainably scale operations without compromising service quality. The airport’s record not only reflects strong demand but also underscores the importance of advanced planning and infrastructure readiness. Continued investment in digital systems, passenger experience enhancements, and safety protocols will remain crucial as Mumbai consolidates its position as India’s premier aviation hub.
