CSMIA Achieves Major Cargo Milestones with 17% Growth
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has reported a remarkable surge in cargo operations in 2024, underscoring its crucial position in India’s air freight network. The airport recorded a significant 17 percent increase in international cargo volumes, marking a year of solid growth and operational excellence. This boost solidifies CSMIA’s role as one of India’s key gateways for international trade and logistics.
One of the standout achievements of the year was the airport’s highest-ever daily cargo tonnage, reaching 204 metric tonnes (MT), demonstrating its capacity to handle increasing cargo demand. Additionally, March 2024 saw a historic milestone, with CSMIA managing a record 60,659 MT of international cargo, further emphasizing the airport’s strategic importance in the global logistics supply chain. The growth spanned both international and domestic cargo categories, with a particular focus on high-demand sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agro-products, and automobile goods. On the international front, pharmaceuticals led the charge with a 24 percent year-on-year growth, while agro-products and automobile goods saw increases of 22 percent and 20 percent, respectively. The domestic cargo sector also saw strong performance, with automobile goods leading the way, growing by an impressive 31 percent.
CSMIA continued to expand its global connectivity, with its network now serving 687 international destinations. New destinations added in 2024 included Tripoli, Khabarovsk, and Chisinau, among others, further broadening Mumbai’s air cargo footprint. The airport’s ability to handle various categories, including dangerous goods and post office mail, reinforces its status as a comprehensive logistics hub. The festive season was another highlight, with e-commerce shipments experiencing a significant boost. International e-commerce cargo grew by 53 percent, while domestic shipments saw an 11 percent increase, reflecting the ongoing boom in online retail. Additionally, agricultural exports reached new heights, with mango shipments reaching approximately 4,700 MT during the year.
Key infrastructure improvements were also made, including the installation of a new 10 MT weighing scale in the export section and the renovation of the main gate with enhanced security and vehicle management systems. These upgrades have contributed to improved operational efficiency and safety. Recognizing its industry-leading performance, CSMIA was awarded the “Cargo Airport of the Year Award” at Air Cargo India for the sixth consecutive year, further solidifying its position as a leader in the global cargo industry.
