The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) has initiated a major road widening plan to tackle chronic traffic congestion in and around Vijayawada. The project aims to upgrade six key arterial roads by December 2026, linking NH-16 and NH-65 through suburban corridors. These upgrades will help divert heavy vehicles from city centres and support uninterrupted access to Autonagar, a vital industrial hub.
Efforts to develop alternate road corridors around Vijayawada are gaining traction, with plans targeting bottlenecks at Enikepadu, Ramavarappadu, and Poranki. These areas currently face severe congestion due to heavy truck traffic bound for Autonagar. With trucks only allowed into the industrial zone during night hours, the strain on city roads has been mounting. The new bypass routes aim to provide all-day access for freight movement while reducing inner-city jams.
The CRDA’s infrastructure strategy includes upgrading Ballemvari Street from Andhra Padu to Bandar Road and improving the Kunta Thippa route. A separate stretch from Nidamanur to Poranki is also being developed for heavy vehicle flow. These corridors will help divert long-distance and cargo vehicles away from central Vijayawada. Additionally, a new link under high-tension lines connecting Enikepadu to Prasadampadu is in the works, adding another freight-friendly route.
Officials have highlighted that these alternate roads are not just traffic solutions but also key to industrial efficiency. Autonagar, one of south India’s largest automobile hubs, has long suffered from limited connectivity. The road upgrades aim to break the pattern of daily traffic snarls by offering dedicated infrastructure that allows trucks to move throughout the day. This is expected to benefit both commuters and businesses.
While metro construction and flyover projects are underway within the city, the bypass approach is seen as a long-term traffic management strategy. Experts believe the project will help decentralise congestion, particularly from NH-16 and NH-65 junctions. Once complete, the six new roads are expected to streamline goods movement, reduce road fatigue for truck drivers, and lower the risk of accidents in dense residential and commercial zones.
Vijayawada’s new bypass road plan signals a shift toward long-term traffic relief and industrial accessibility. By easing pressure on congested zones and improving round-the-clock access to Autonagar, the CRDA’s strategy supports safer, smoother urban mobility.
