Covid-19 has resurfaced in Patna, with seven new cases reported in the last 24 hours, including a medical intern at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH).
The fresh infections have raised concerns about a potential resurgence in urban parts of Bihar. Three of the confirmed cases were detected at NMCH after 26 suspected patients were tested on Friday, while the remaining four emerged from private laboratories located in Kankarbagh, Agamkuan and RPS Mor, indicating early signs of community spread in city neighbourhoods. Among the infected is an intern doctor undergoing training at NMCH, according to Patna Civil Surgeon Dr Avinash Kumar Singh. All seven patients have been advised home isolation as their symptoms remain mild. “One patient had visited the Ophthalmology Department, another the Surgery Department, and the third had come to the Medicine Department,” said Dr Sanjay Kumar, Head of Microbiology at NMCH.
Currently, Patna district has 17 active Covid cases—six at NMCH, five at AIIMS Patna, and six others from private facilities—marking a slight uptick in infections after months of low numbers. In response to the developing situation, the Bihar Health Department has announced a statewide oxygen mock drill to be held on Saturday. The move follows guidelines issued by the central government to ensure preparedness in case of a new Covid wave. The drill will assess the functionality of PSA oxygen plants in government hospitals, availability of oxygen cylinders and reserves, auditing of pipeline systems, ICU readiness, and emergency protocols for healthcare personnel. “We are intensifying efforts to ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply and emergency preparedness across the state,” said a senior official from the department.
Authorities have urged citizens to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, especially in hospitals and congested areas, to prevent further transmission. While symptoms remain mild so far, officials warn that vigilance is key in containing a possible spread.
