Consultant Appointed For Gandhi Nagar Market Redevelopment

Authorities in Delhi have initiated plans to redevelop the iconic Gandhi Nagar Market, one of Asia’s largest wholesale garment hubs, with officials appointing a consultant to prepare a comprehensive redevelopment blueprint. The initiative aims to modernise infrastructure and address long-standing issues that have affected both traders and shoppers in the bustling commercial area.

The redevelopment project will be carried out by the Trans Yamuna Area Development Board as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic activity and urban infrastructure in the Yamuna-side districts of the capital. Officials said the consultant will conduct surveys across the market and prepare a detailed plan outlining the scope of the transformation. Spread across roughly three kilometres in East Delhi, Gandhi Nagar Market has grown from a small residential-area trade cluster in the early 1970s into a major textile and garment distribution hub. The market now hosts more than 15,000 shops and around 5,000 garment manufacturing units, supplying fabrics, readymade clothes and accessories to buyers across India and even neighbouring countries.

Despite its economic significance, the market continues to struggle with serious infrastructure gaps. Traders and visitors frequently face problems such as congested and damaged roads, inadequate sewage and drainage systems, lack of public toilets and drinking water facilities, and widespread traffic congestion due to limited parking space. Overhead electrical wires, unmanaged waste and overcrowded lanes have further complicated daily operations in the area. According to officials, the redevelopment plan is expected to address these challenges through multiple infrastructure upgrades. Proposed measures include improved roads and drainage networks, better parking facilities, underground electrical wiring, and enhanced sanitation systems. Authorities are also exploring the introduction of small electric “golf cart” services to improve last-mile connectivity within the dense market lanes.

Traffic congestion has been identified as one of the most pressing issues in the locality. With the Delhi-Saharanpur highway passing through the market, goods vehicles, tempos and private cars often occupy roadside spaces throughout the day. Officials said the redevelopment proposal includes a parking facility beneath the highway near the Pushta area that could accommodate around 1,500 two-wheelers and up to 700 cars, which may significantly ease congestion. Beyond infrastructure improvements, the revamp is expected to support the market’s economic ecosystem. Gandhi Nagar Market reportedly generates a daily turnover of approximately ₹250–300 crore and provides about one lakh direct jobs along with several lakh indirect employment opportunities across the garment supply chain.

Urban planners believe that upgrading such large wholesale markets is essential to sustain their economic vitality while improving working conditions for traders, labourers and visiting buyers. With the consultant’s survey now underway, the redevelopment blueprint will determine how the historic garment hub evolves into a more organised and accessible commercial district in the coming years.
