The construction chemicals industry is on the brink of a significant expansion, driven by accelerated urbanisation and substantial infrastructure investments. At the 4th edition of the NextGen Chemical and Petrochemical Summit 2024, held by Indian Chemical News in Mumbai on July 11-12, industry leaders underscored the burgeoning opportunities and challenges within this sector.
The sixth session of the summit, titled ‘Construction Chemicals: The Rising Opportunity’, was a focal point for discussions on the sector’s future. Moderated by officials from Indian Chemical News, the session highlighted the immense potential of construction chemicals amidst India’s large-scale infrastructure projects. Experts noted that with the Indian government ramping up investments in infrastructure, there is an unprecedented scope for advanced construction chemicals. The recent incidents at various airports underscore the critical need for using appropriate technologies and raising awareness about quality construction materials. Additionally, the residential market presents a vast opportunity, necessitating fundamental education about construction and waterproofing chemicals at the grassroots level.
Sauradip Chemical Industries’ Managing Director emphasised the dual opportunities in the domestic and export markets. “With the government’s robust focus on infrastructure, the next decade will see substantial growth in construction chemicals. Rapid urbanisation and diverse construction activities—spanning residential, commercial, and industrial projects—are driving this demand. Furthermore, Indian firms, known for their quality and cost-efficiency, are well-positioned to cater to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe. Key areas such as concrete admixtures, adhesives, sealants, and waterproofing additives hold immense growth potential. For sustained long-term growth, building a strong brand is essential, while immediate focus should be on ensuring regulatory compliance. The adoption of bio-based, recyclable materials also promises both cost savings and environmental benefits,” he stated.
Business Development Manager at Sika India, Target Market Concrete, highlighted a crucial aspect of the industry—training and awareness. He pointed out that the lack of scientific knowledge among masons and carpenters leads to improper product selection and application. “Training our workforce in the latest technological advancements and proper product usage is vital. Effective construction practices, such as accurate waterproofing and the use of appropriate repair technologies, hinge on understanding the chemistry involved. Addressing these gaps can significantly enhance the efficiency and quality of construction projects,” he added.
The summit also acknowledged the contributions of Gold Partners Epsilon Carbon, Forbes Marshall, Gharda Chemicals, Indofil Industries, Ingenero, IPCO, Jaaji Technologies, Moglix, PIP, Port of Antwerp – Bruges, RIECO, and Re Sustainability, as well as Associate Partners HPCL and Nuberg EPC. Their support underscores the collaborative effort needed to drive the construction chemicals industry forward.
