Community Feedback Sought for Urban Open Space Management Plan

The release of a draft Urban Open Space Land Management Plan has initiated a period of community comment to shape the future management of parks, sports grounds and public open spaces. The ACT Government has consolidated five regional plans into a single guiding document, aiming to ensure the maintenance and protection of public open spaces to a high standard for the enjoyment of all residents. With Canberra being ranked as the top city in Australia for access to open space, the plan aims to enhance existing urban open spaces and cater to the recreational needs of the diverse community while preserving biodiversity and environmental value.

The Urban Open Space Land Management Plan outlines a strategic direction for improving amenities for sports, play, and relaxation while emphasising preserving biodiversity and environmental value within these spaces. The plan includes new actions designed to support environmentally sensitive operations, providing guidance for land management near urban lakes and ponds, stormwater networks, and nature reserves.

As caring for urban open spaces and green infrastructure falls upon the entire community, the ACT Government is urging residents to provide feedback on the draft plan. This community consultation period aims to gather input on the plan’s direction, principles, and strategies and solicit ideas for optimising the utilisation of the most beloved spaces.
