Coimbatore: The industrial sector in Coimbatore has expressed strong approval of the Tamil Nadu government’s recent decision to grant land for the expansion of the city’s airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The state government has agreed to lease the land on a 99-year term, free of cost and without conditions, a move that has been warmly received by local business bodies.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC), has lauded Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for this decisive action. ICCIC President praised the move, stating, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Chief Minister for facilitating the lease of acquired patta and government poramboke land to the AAI unconditionally. This decision is instrumental in accelerating the expansion of the airport.” Previously, the state government had proposed leasing the land with stipulations, including an increase in lease charges should the AAI privatise airport maintenance. This condition had delayed the expansion project, prompting the government to revise its stance and approve the lease without constraints.
The expansion is set to significantly enhance Coimbatore’s connectivity, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and increase the number of international flights. This development is anticipated to benefit not only Coimbatore but also the surrounding regions including Salem, Karur, Erode, Tirupur, and the Nilgiris. J. Sathish, President of the Kongu Global Forum, highlighted the expected economic benefits, noting, “The expansion will facilitate more direct flights from Southeast Asia and Gulf countries, fostering economic growth and attracting additional investments to Coimbatore and its neighbouring districts.”
Sriramulu, another key figure in the local industrial community, urged the Union government to consider revenue-sharing arrangements with the state to further support the airport’s development. Overall, the decision is seen as a positive step towards transforming Coimbatore into a significant hub for global trade and industry, bolstering its economic prospects and connectivity.
