Coimbatore Set for Transformation with Landmark Infrastructure Projects

Coimbatore is poised for a significant transformation with the announcement of several landmark projects aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure and cultural landscape. These initiatives, backed by substantial investments, reflect the city’s ambition to match the development pace of larger metropolitan areas like Chennai.

One of the most notable projects is the construction of the Semmozhi Poonga, an expansive eco-friendly park being developed on 45 acres of the former Coimbatore Central Prison grounds in Gandhipuram. With an estimated cost of ₹161.05 crore, the park is designed to feature 22 themed gardens, an open-air stadium, and various sustainable amenities. As of March 2025, approximately 75% of the construction work has been completed, indicating steady progress towards its completion. Complementing this green initiative is the development of the Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre, a ₹300 crore project aimed at fostering knowledge and learning. Situated on a 10-acre plot in Anupparpalayam, the eight-storey facility is expected to house over one lakh books and state-of-the-art scientific resources. The project, which includes a ₹245 crore allocation for construction and ₹55 crore for resources and equipment, is on track for completion by January 2026.
In the realm of sports infrastructure, Coimbatore is set to enhance its facilities with the construction of new cricket and hockey stadiums. The proposed international cricket stadium, planned on a 30.36-acre site previously under the Coimbatore Central Prison Department at the open-air jail in Ondipudur, is designed to accommodate at least 30,000 spectators and includes extensive parking facilities .Meanwhile, the hockey stadium, to be developed at the Sasthri Ground in RS Puram, is expected to meet international standards and is slated for completion by April 202
These developments were highlighted during a recent event where the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation Commissioner emphasized the city’s growth trajectory and its alignment with sustainable and inclusive urban planning. The Commissioner also acknowledged the efforts of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (CREDAI) Coimbatore in advocating for infrastructure improvements, including the expansion of the Coimbatore airport. The airport expansion project, which includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, cargo terminal, and extended runway, aims to significantly boost the city’s connectivity and economic prospects .
Collectively, these projects signify a comprehensive approach to urban development in Coimbatore, focusing on sustainability, cultural enrichment, and enhanced quality of life for its residents. As the city continues to evolve, these initiatives are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping its future as a vibrant and inclusive urban center.

  1. What stupidity. Coimbatore is reeling under severe water scarcity. Supplied once in fifteen days. Roads are in pathetic condition. The Government Hospital needs improvement on war footing. Spend the money for the welfare of the people and not for the politicians and their coteries to loot the funds. With 750 crores many such projects can be undertaken.
