Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has floated a tender worth Rs. 265 crore for civil works related to the expansion of its international terminal, located in Nedumbassery, Kochi. This expansion is part of a larger project that aims to enhance passenger facilities and increase the airport’s capacity. The total expansion plan for the airport is valued at Rs. 1,300 crore, with approximately Rs. 700 crore earmarked for the development of the international terminal alone.
The expansion project focuses on enhancing the existing Terminal 3 (T3), which will include the addition of eight more aerobridges to facilitate smoother passenger boarding and deboarding. The civil works tender includes the expansion of the terminal’s built-up area by 600,000 square feet, significantly increasing the capacity to accommodate more international flights and passengers. The deadline for submitting bids for the tender is December 19, 2024. Once awarded, the civil works are expected to be completed within 21 months. In addition to the expansion, the terminal will feature substantial commercial spaces, including retail outlets and lounge areas, improving the overall passenger experience. A pre-bid meeting for interested parties will take place on December 8 at the Cochin International Airport office in Nedumbassery.
This ambitious expansion project is aimed at catering to the growing demand for air travel, particularly with Kochi being a key gateway to West Asia and other international destinations. Cochin International Airport, which is the busiest airport in Kerala, has seen consistent growth in passenger traffic over the years. The expanded terminal will not only enhance capacity but also improve services, ensuring that the airport remains competitive in a rapidly evolving aviation sector. For the local community and businesses around Kochi, the expansion of Cochin International Airport is a symbol of progress and development. The airport plays a vital role in the region’s economy by facilitating international trade, tourism, and business. With the addition of new facilities and commercial spaces, local retailers and service providers will likely benefit, creating new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. The expansion project is expected to boost the region’s global connectivity, bringing in more visitors and opportunities for growth, benefiting not just travelers but the entire city.
