Coal India is embarking on a significant expansion endeavour, with plans to establish two thermal power plants in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. The investment for these projects is set to total INR 21,547 crore.
One of the projects is slated to be located near Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, while the other is planned for Sundergarh district in Odisha. The first project is positioned as a joint venture between CI and the Madhya Pradesh government, with a plant capacity of 1×660 mw. The estimated cost for this project is INR 5,600 crore.
South Eastern Coalfields, a subsidiary of CIL, will invest inr 857 crore as equity in this venture, which will be executed in partnership with the Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company. Work on this project is expected to be completed by 2028.
The second venture involves Mahanadi Coalfields, another subsidiary of CIL. This subsidiary is planning to construct a 2×800 mw pithead plant thermal power plant near its Basundhara mines, situated in Sundergarh district, Odisha. The project’s estimated cost is INR 15,947 crore, with completion target set for 2028.
These projects align with India’s broader energy goals and indicate a commitment to a balanced energy mix, even as the nation explores renewable energy sources.
