India’s renewable energy future, Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to supply 4500 MW of carbon-free energy for green ammonia production.
This collaboration aims to bolster India’s transition to a net-zero emissions economy. The MoU, signed on 7th May, outlines a phased approach to delivering renewable energy through a combination of solar and wind power. CIL plans to establish solar capacities ranging from 2500 MW to 3000 MW and wind capacities between 1500 MW and 2000 MW across various states. The estimated investment for this project is approximately Rs. 25,000 crores.
AM Green, a venture promoted by the founders of Greenko Group, targets producing 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This production capacity is equivalent to about 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, representing a fifth of India’s target for green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and 10% of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports by 2030. To ensure a steady supply of green energy, AM Green plans to integrate the renewable sources supplied by CIL with pumped hydro storage systems. This integration will facilitate round-the-clock power availability for the green ammonia facilities.
P M Prasad, Chairman of CIL, emphasized the company’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future, stating, “While coal remains our mainstay in meeting India’s expanding energy needs in the near term, our plans include a proactive role in building a greener and more sustainable future.” Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of AM Green, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to partner with CIL on one of the world’s largest carbon-free, renewable energy supply contracts. We aim to become one of the most cost-competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules in the world.”
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in India’s renewable energy journey, aligning with the nation’s broader goals of achieving a cleaner energy mix and reducing carbon emissions. The successful implementation of this project could set a precedent for future public-private partnerships in the renewable energy sector. As the project progresses, stakeholders will be keenly observing its impact on India’s energy landscape, particularly in terms of sustainability, economic growth, and technological innovation. The partnership between CIL and AM Green underscores the potential of collaborative efforts in driving significant advancements in the renewable energy sector.
