CMRL Addresses Public Access to Restrooms at Metro Stations

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has provided clarity on the accessibility of
restrooms for non-commuters at its metro stations, addressing recent confusion among the public. The issue arose when concerns were raised about whether individuals not using the metro services could avail themselves of restroom facilities, some reportedly purchasing tickets solely for restroom access.

CMRL has categorised its stations into paid and unpaid areas, delineated by the presence of automatic entry gates. According to CMRL, restrooms are available in both paid and unpaid areas across different stations. In stations where restrooms are situated in the paid area, access is granted only to passengers with valid metro tickets. This necessitates a minimum fare ticket purchase of Rs 10 to enter the paid area for restroom usage. However, CMRL has affirmed that access to restrooms located in the unpaid areas of stations is free of charge. This provision ensures that members of the public can utilize restroom facilities without the need to purchase a metro ticket.

Responding to queries, CMRL clarified that it does not charge the general public for using station toilets. The distinction between paid and unpaid areas is aimed at regulating access to certain facilities within the station premises while maintaining operational efficiency and security standards. Instances of confusion were noted at various stations, with differing practices reported. While some stations enforced the ticket requirement for restroom access, others did not, creating ambiguity among users. In light of these observations, CMRL encourages clarity and consistency across all stations regarding the application of restroom usage policies. This includes ensuring that station staff uniformly adhere to guidelines to provide seamless service to commuters and non-commuters alike. The policy framework underscores CMRL’s commitment to providing accessible and efficient public amenities while adhering to operational protocols designed to enhance passenger experience and facility management across Chennai’s metro network. The issue remains pertinent as CMRL continues to refine its customer service standards, aiming to streamline access policies and improve user experience at all metro stations under its jurisdiction.
