Climate Action Cells to Drive Net Zero Goals

The Maharashtra Environment Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) calling for the establishment of climate action cells in cities, districts, and divisions across the state. This directive comes amid severe flooding affecting large parts of Maharashtra, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate-related challenges.

The GR mandates that 43 cities under the Amrut scheme, along with various districts and divisions, must establish dedicated climate action cells. These cells will be tasked with devising comprehensive climate action plans tailored to their respective regions. The overarching goal is to align local efforts with India’s ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. Currently, only a few cities—Solapur, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—have proactively developed climate action plans.

The newly established climate action cells will be responsible for not only implementing these plans but also integrating them with the state’s broader climate strategy and decarbonisation roadmap. This initiative forms a key component of the Green Maharashtra programme, aimed at promoting sustainable development and reducing carbon footprints. To support this transition, the Environment Department has partnered with C40 Cities and WRI India. These collaborations are designed to facilitate the shift towards low-carbon, climate-resilient urban development. The involvement of these organisations underscores the state’s commitment to leveraging global expertise in achieving its environmental objectives.

The creation of climate action cells marks a pivotal step in addressing the state’s climate vulnerabilities. By requiring local authorities to develop and execute tailored climate strategies, the GR seeks to foster a more proactive and coordinated approach to environmental management. As the state grapples with the immediate impacts of flooding, this new directive aims to build long-term resilience against future climate-related adversities.
