Mumbai’s water reservoirs have reached a commendable 97.75% of their total capacity, according to the latest data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This impressive figure underscores the city’s robust water management amidst the monsoon season, securing a stable drinking water supply for its residents. As of the latest update, the cumulative water stock across Mumbai’s seven key reservoirs stands at 14,14,824 million litres.
The reservoirs include Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. Notably, Modak Sagar and Vihar Lakes are currently at full capacity, both holding 100% of their available water stock. Similarly, Tulsi Lake also reports a full water level, indicating an ample supply. The Tansa Lake, which is a significant contributor to Mumbai’s water supply, is at 98.29% of its capacity. Other reservoirs are also performing well: Middle Vaitarna at 97.81%, Upper Vaitarna at 97.45%, and Bhatsa at 97.21%. The overflow from these lakes, particularly during the heavy rains in July, has significantly boosted water reserves. Middle Vaitarna, Vihar, and Modak Sagar lakes began overflowing on July 4 and July 25, respectively, while Tansa Lake followed suit on July 26, 2024. These overflows have substantially increased the water levels in all seven reservoirs.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted intermittent moderate rainfall for Mumbai, with an orange alert in place for heavy rain in the city. The IMD’s weather update predicts a generally cloudy sky with possible heavy showers in isolated areas towards the evening and night. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 31°C, with a minimum of 26°C. Additionally, the BMC has advised that a high tide of approximately 3.75 metres is expected at 2:28 PM, and a low tide of about 0.97 metres at 8:24 PM. The BMC’s proactive water management strategies, coupled with recent rainfall, have ensured that Mumbai’s water supply remains secure and abundant, providing a critical resource for the city’s needs.
