Circular business models hold USD 7 bn revenue potential

A recent joint report by the India Cellular & Electronics Association (Icea) and
Accenture has revealed that India stands to unlock a revenue potential of USD 7
billion by 2035 through the adoption of circular business models. These models,
encompassing circular design, repair and resell among others, are poised to
reshape the electronics sector, driving economic growth and enhancing
resilience.

The report emphasizes that the projected market size for these circular models is
expected to reach USD 13 billion by 2035. However, through strategic public
and private partnerships, this potential expands to an impressive USD 20
billion.

Furthermore, the report highlights that three core business models – repair,
resell, and recycling – are already flourishing in India, primarily driven by the
informal sector. Currently, 90 percent of collection and 70 percent of recycling
are managed by this competitive sector, but only 22 percent of the collected e-
waste is handled by the formal sector, indicating room for improvement.

The report underscores the immense potential that circular business models hold
for India’s electronics industry and the broader economy, providing a clear
roadmap for sustainable growth and resource efficiency.
