Chifeng Launches World’s Largest Off Grid Green Ammonia Plant Using AI

In a global milestone for sustainable energy and industrial decarbonisation, officials have commissioned the world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia facility in Chifeng’s Net Zero Industrial Park. Entirely powered by a proprietary off-grid renewable energy system, the plant marks a breakthrough in scaling clean fuel alternatives for heavy industry. Designed with AI-driven optimisation and advanced energy storage, the project not only produces 320,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually but also sets the benchmark for zero-carbon manufacturing zones worldwide.

What sets this facility apart is its ability to operate independently of the grid, harnessing only solar and wind energy, balanced with smart batteries and real-time meteorological forecasting. Engineers have created a dynamic storage solution that converts surplus green energy into liquid nitrogen, which powers air-separation units and electrolyzers. These systems adjust automatically to fluctuations in renewable supply, maintaining uninterrupted ammonia production. The resulting green ammonia serves as both a fuel and transport medium for hydrogen—solving storage and mobility challenges that have long hindered adoption in sectors like shipping and fertilisers. By 2028, the plant is expected to scale up to 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia per year. The AI-enabled control systems ensure continual fine-tuning of power generation, energy use, and storage—allowing real-time, low-cost fuel production without relying on fossil-powered grids.

This model, officials argue, proves that large-scale green hydrogen is no longer a futuristic concept but a working reality capable of decarbonising industrial supply chains. As countries scramble for alternatives to fossil fuels, this initiative offers a practical template for energy self-reliant manufacturing. Global interest in the Chifeng model is already accelerating, with international partnerships driving adoption of green ammonia across the chemical, fertiliser and maritime sectors. A major offtake agreement with a Japanese trading conglomerate is in place, signalling confidence in the project’s scalability. Additionally, the plant’s certification by an international inspection body for renewable ammonia ensures adherence to strict sustainability and safety norms. These endorsements may help shape a new global standard for green fuels in energy trade and industrial policy.

The modular design of the plant means similar facilities can be replicated across other regions, including developing countries aiming to leapfrog to clean energy infrastructure. For India and other emerging economies, the Chifeng example offers critical lessons in coupling AI with renewables to achieve off-grid energy autonomy. As the world races towards carbon neutrality, such breakthroughs signal the emergence of ‘clean molecule’ economies, where energy is stored and transported not as electrons, but as sustainable fuels, managed by intelligent systems.
