Chhattisgarh Plans Major Development in Durg

Durg, one of Chhattisgarh’s key industrial cities, is set to witness a sweeping transformation as multiple high-impact infrastructure projects take shape, enhancing connectivity, boosting industrial output, and reshaping its urban landscape.

At the heart of this developmental drive is the Durg-Raipur-Arang Expressway, a 92-kilometre six-lane greenfield project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which is being constructed to significantly cut travel time between Durg and Raipur to approximately 20 minutes.Expected to be completed by May 2025, the expressway will traverse crucial nodes such as Anjora, Patora, Supkona, Abhanpur, and Naya Raipur, culminating at Arang. The access-controlled corridor is designed not only to facilitate smoother commutes but also to support future urban and economic expansion across central Chhattisgarh.

Further strengthening regional links, the proposed Raipur-Hyderabad Expressway—spanning over 530 kilometres—is set to pass through Durg, connecting it to critical southern economic corridors, including Rajnandgaon and Gadchiroli, before heading towards Hyderabad. This ambitious project promises to unlock new avenues of inter-state trade, thereby integrating Durg more firmly into national supply chains. In parallel, efforts to modernise urban mobility are gaining traction with the Chhattisgarh government allocating ₹5 crore for the feasibility study of the Raipur-Durg metro rail project. The metro aims to reduce urban congestion, lower emissions, and provide an eco-friendly public transport alternative for the growing population commuting between the two cities. With sustainability at the core of planning, the project marks a pivotal shift toward climate-conscious infrastructure development.

Complementing these connectivity improvements are notable investments in the city’s industrial base. Durg is seeing the rise of a conveyor belt manufacturing unit in Bhilai with a production target of 20,000 metres annually. Meanwhile, in Kandarka, an agricultural tools manufacturing unit has been greenlit to produce over 1,000 metric tonnes of implements including harrows, scarifiers, and cultivators each year. These initiatives, backed by environmental clearances, reinforce the city’s role in supporting the regional agricultural economy and meeting rising equipment demands.Energy security for this growth is also under strategic expansion. NSPCL, a joint venture between NTPC and SAIL, which currently operates an 814 MW captive power facility in Bhilai, is exploring the addition of a 250 MW unit to cater to growing industrial power needs.

Such developments align with the state’s energy infrastructure goals while ensuring that industrial expansion does not outpace supply.
Durg’s emergence as an infrastructural and industrial hotspot is not only redefining its urban identity but also laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and sustainable growth model in Chhattisgarh. These initiatives point to a future where mobility, clean energy, and job creation converge to create a city built for resilience and equity. With strong government backing, environmentally conscious planning, and a focus on connectivity and industrial diversification, Durg is on the cusp of becoming a pivotal growth engine—not just for Chhattisgarh, but for India’s central corridor.
